The New York Yankees ended their longest losing streak of the season with a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to power an offense that produced 12 hits in the series finale.
Carlos Rodón earned his ninth win of the season despite giving up three solo home runs, a season high for the left-hander. He held the Angels to four hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking one. Rodón rebounded from two consecutive rough outings against the Boston Red Sox and helped the American League East-leading Yankees avoid what would have been their second-ever four-game sweep at the current Yankee Stadium.
The Angels took an early 2-1 lead in the second inning when Jo Adell followed Mike Trout’s first-inning solo homer with one of his own. But the Yankees responded quickly. After DJ LeMahieu singled, Grisham hit his 14th home run of the season to right-center, putting New York ahead. Goldschmidt followed with a line-drive homer down the left-field line, giving the Yankees a 4-2 advantage.
New York extended its lead in the seventh when Cody Bellinger drove in a run with one of his three hits on the day. Bellinger’s RBI single gave the Yankees a 5-3 cushion. In the eighth, Aaron Judge doubled before a 35-minute rain delay. After play resumed, he came around to score on a groundout by Anthony Volpe. Austin Wells added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring at 7-3.
Rodón allowed long balls to Trout, Adell, and Taylor Ward, but limited further damage from the Angels, attempting to complete a four-game sweep of the Yankees for the first time in franchise history. Ward’s solo shot in the sixth briefly brought Los Angeles within one, but they could not mount a late rally.
Tyler Anderson started for the Angels and allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings. The left-hander was struck on his lower right leg by a comebacker in the sixth inning but remained in the game. He was charged with his fifth straight loss, dropping to 2-5 on the season.
The Yankees entered the game having dropped six straight, their longest losing streak since a nine-game slide in August 2023. The win prevented their first four-game sweep by a visiting team since the Toronto Blue Jays accomplished the feat in September 2021.
Both teams now shift to new series. The Yankees will host the Baltimore Orioles with left-hander Max Fried (9-2, 1.89 ERA) taking the mound in the opener of a three-game set. The Angels return home to face the Houston Astros, with left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-6, 3.05 ERA) slated to start. According to betting odds, the Yankees opened as -160 favorites against the Orioles, while the Angels are listed as +120 underdogs against Houston. The over/under for both games is set at 8.5 runs.
