Vin Scully inspired many throughout his illustrious broadcasting career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he’s now being honored by Wells of Life building a memorial water well in Uganda.
Based out of San Juan Capistrano, California, Wells of Life is committed to providing rural Ugandans with access to safe, clean water through the installation or restoration of sustainable borehole water wells and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) educational programs.
“There are not enough words to describe the life of Vin Scully,” Wells of Life founder and CEO Nick Jordan told DodgerBlue.com in an exclusive interview.
“And I wouldn’t certainly even hope to add to what’s already been said, except to add the action of providing a water well, which I believe is the greatest way you can honor a life that has been well lived, somebody who cared so much for others and who sought so little acclaim for what he did.”
Scully’s family approved the memorial well in October, and it paved the way to beginning a fundraising effort that has an $8,000 goal.
“On behalf of our mother and father, our family would like to thank Wells of Life for the Vin Scully Memorial Well,” the Scully family said in a statement provided to DodgerBlue.com.
“We know that the lifesaving water provided by this well will serve the community in Uganda and will be a reminder of dad’s powerful faith in God, his dedication to serving those in need and of the kindness he generously shared with others. We are so grateful to Wells of Life for keeping his memory alive in such a beautiful way. May God Bless You All.”
Jordan, a native of Ireland, was not exposed to Scully like most other Dodgers fans, but still gained an appreciation for his impact despite not being a baseball fan.
“I’m going to tell you that a guy like me when I came to this country, didn’t know one end of a baseball bat from the other,” Jordan admitted.” So I can only tell you that my appreciation for Vin Scully was more for the humanitarian, the Father, the wonderful Catholic man that he was.”
The non-profit organization has additionally established wells in memory of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, Pope Francis and Robin Williams, among others.
Wells of Life recently celebrated the funding of their 1,000th well and have brought clean water to 1 million citizens in need.
