Tim Brown Believes Derek Carr Should Remain Raiders Quarterback In Las Vegas

The offseason rumor mill is already in full effect for much of the NFL, and once again, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr finds himself right in the middle of it.

After spotting New England Patriots free agent quarterback Tom Brady talking with Raiders owner Mark Davis at a UFC fight in Las Vegas, the world jumped at the opportunity to connect the pair. Since then, Brady to the Raiders has been the talk of the NFL world.

Of course, that would mean that Carr would be on his way out of town before even officially moving in. According to Scott Blair of NBC Sports, Raiders legend Tim Brown believes that Carr will remain with the team for the upcoming season:

“I don’t think they’re going to make a move this year,” Brown said last week during an interview on NBC Sports Bay Area’s Radio Row. “I don’t foresee them doing that but, at the same time, it’s always good as an athlete to know, ‘I really need to go out and do well.’”

Carr had an excellent 2019 campaign, but perhaps the rumors will encourage him to play even better. He finished the season with 4,054 passing yards and a 70.4% completion rate, career highs for Carr in both categories. He also finished the year with eight interceptions, his second-fewest since entering the league.

To do this in the past year was particularly impressive as Carr seldom had the same group of receivers to throw to week in and week out. Darren Waller emerged as his go-to man, but other than him Carr had somewhat limited options.

Brown feels that Carr has never even had a true No. 1 option during his tenure with the Raiders:

“Derek has never had a true No. 1 receiver,” Brown said. “Amari Cooper was there but there were some issues during that time, even though they had some good years together. I think people felt like he was not a top, top guy. And then the whole AB situation happened this year.”

Antonio Brown did appear to be Carr’s savior last year, but of course that started falling apart even before the preseason. Eventually, rookie Hunter Renfrow stepped up, but it was too little too late for the Raiders.

For Brown, he wants Carr to get that true No. 1 before casting judgment onto the Raiders’ franchise quarterback:

“I would love to see Derek with a true No. 1, a guy who, on 3rd-and-6, everybody knows where the ball is going,” Brown said. “From there, you’ll know. If Derek has a [subpar] year like he has had or the team is not in the playoffs, maybe you think about a move. But I think you’ll see a big difference in Derek in that situation, with the top receiver on the team.”

Although all of the rumors have been about Carr, hopefully, the Raiders can find a player to compliment him like Brown has suggested. The Raiders have a bounty of talented young players and adding in a tried and tested wide receiver might just push them into the playoffs with Carr at the helm in 2020.
