Thoughts From The Media: Kadri-Rosen Trade For Barrie-Kerfoot

A large collection of media thoughts from the trade that saw the Toronto Maple Leafs send Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and 2020 3rd round pick to the Colorado Avalanche for Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot and a 2016 6th round pick. The Avs are also picking up 50 percent of Barrie’s cap hit this year.

Ryan S Clark: Avalanche GM Joe Sakic on trading Tyson Barrie: “With the arrival and emergence of Samuel Girard and Cale Makar, as well as the recent draft pick of Bowen Byram, we felt it was time to move in this direction with Tyson’s contract expiring next summer.”

Ryan S Clark: Avs GM Sakic on Nazem Kadri: “Nazem is a proven goal scorer and a fierce competitor who plays in all situations. He is under contract for the next three seasons and will immediately fit right in as our second-line center and improve our scoring depth.”

After trading Barrie (50% RS), Kerfoot (RFA Arb) & a 2020 6th round pick to Toronto for Kadri, Rosen, & a 2020 3rd RD pick, the #Avs now have $27,150,239

Pierre LeBrun: “There were 2 teams on Kadri’s No list that showed interest over the past week but he didn’t want to waive as is his right under his 10-team NTC. But Colorado was not on his No list so the Leafs free to trade him there. Good trade fit with the Avs, Leafs finally get top pair RHD”

Eric Duhatschek: “Tyson Barrie is very Torey Krug-like in terms of what he brings to the mix – fabulous PP QB, but someone who can be an adventure in his own end. Kerfoot is better than you think. Major upgrade for @MapleLeafs in my estimation.”

Adrian Dater: “We all knew Barrie’s days were numbered. Surprised Kerfoot gone too. But they needed a 2C to seriously compete. Kadri is one”

Down Goes Brown: “Instant reaction: Like this Leafs move in terms of balancing the roster and addressing needs, especially with so much salary retained, but already worried about a Barrie extension.”

Michael Augello: “The #Leafs emerge from July 1 with a top four D of Rielly, Barrie, Muzzin and Ceci and because of the salary retention on Barrie and Kerfoot being an RFA, they have another $2.5 Million in cap space to match a potential offer sheet.”

Greg Wyshynski: “Dig this trade for the Leafs for many, many reasons.”

Nazem Kadri (in return to Colorado) is a great play-driver with a very, very positive power-play impact with an ok shot and, ironically given his temper, a good penalty differential. pic.twitter.com/BwekFfvscQ

Brian Lawton: “The real value of #kadri is the 3 more years he is signed for at a very inexpensive $4,500,000 which is a great number for his role in today’s market.”

Luke Fox: “From Avs perspective, Kadri slides in as a highly motivated 2C, an upgrade from Carl Soderberg. Barrie wasn’t going to be in Colorado long with Makar and Byram younger and cheaper and hot on his heels. Also, saves Sakic arguing over money with RFA Kerfoot.”

Kevin Paul Dupont: “Leafs move Kadri to Avs. Tough break for Bruins. Kadri agruably the Bruins MVP in Round 1 each of last two seasons.”

Gus Katsaros: “I dig Tyson Barrie and Kerfoot is good depth. Kadri will fit nicely and help the Avs .. properly balanced at first glance.”

Dustin Nielson: “Still not sure the Leafs can sign Kerfoot and Marner. Nice pick up though for sure. Kadri will bring a lot to the Avs, I understand why they went and got him. Lots on going in this deal.”

Adam Proteau: “Okay, let’s talk about Nazem. If you were playing against him, you hated him; that meant he was doing his job. But he was always great to deal with from a media perspective, and he was a terrific representative of the team off-ice. You’ll be missed, @43_Kadri

Travis Yost: “Kadri is one of the more underrated players in the entire league. This is a pretty damn even trade.”

Scott Wheeler: “And the Avs get some serious forward depth, make room for Makar to play PP1, Girard to play PP2 while they wait for Byram, Timmins and co. That team is going to be so much fun.”

Scott Wheeler: On Kerfoot: “Versatile middle-six forward. Used to play C but has been a winger for a while now. Young (24) RFA the Leafs can control, though he’s due for a raise ala Kapanen/Johnsson. Was a ton of fun to watch at Harvard but he’s a guy who does a lot well without any one elite tool.”

Murray Pam: “Kerfoot is good. Sakic was fleeced.”

Luke Fox: “Tyson Barrie is a top-four, right-shot defenceman. It cost Nazem Kadri but it happened.’

Dom Luszczyszyn: “I like Barrie a lot, but he’s not the strongest defensively. He *is* an excellent puck-mover though and leaves me very exciting for a Leafs team that goes all in on mobility.”

His on-ice defensive results vary enormously even when his context doesn’t change very much. Compare this past season and the previous one, with similar quality mates and similar zone usage: pic.twitter.com/2YfkpdOn2Y

TRADE
Leafs: Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot, 6th
Avalanche: Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen, 3rd

Kadri and Barrie were both luxuries their old teams no longer needed. A sensible swap of talent, with the Leafs getting a defensively sound center to replace Kadri to boot. pic.twitter.com/VpWXHR8K3G
