The Los Angeles Rams will have Matthew Stafford back as their starting quarterback this year, but the backup role is still undecided.
With Jimmy Garoppolo unlikely to return and Ty Simpson only entering his first NFL season, Stetson Bennett could very well earn the No. 2 spot on the Rams’ quarterback depth chart.
Bennett has not taken a snap at the NFL level yet, but McVay feels he has made a lot of progress in offseason workouts, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
“I’ve seen tremendous growth,” McVay said. “Obviously, with Matthew not being out here based on the plan and the schedule that we’ve kind of thought was going to be best for him for now and for the long term, Stetson’s gotten a lot more reps than he would’ve otherwise. I think he’s done a really nice job. He’s earning the confidence of his teammates in terms of commanding the huddle. Then, he’s done a lot of good stuff in terms of reading with his feet. [Associate Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach] Dave Ragone does such a good job with those guys as a whole but both he and Ty have had good growth. Stetson especially, I think he’s had a really good last couple of weeks, and I’ve been proud of him.”
Bennett has been taking first-team reps in organized team activities (OTAs) and should get plenty of additional opportunities this summer with the Rams likely to manage Stafford’s workload.
He will likely continue leading the offense in training camp and could even make some starts during the preseason as well.
Bennett originally joined the Rams after he was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which came after he led the Georgia Bulldogs to a national championship.
Rams head coach Sean McVay signs sneaker deal with Jordan Brand
As McVay prepares for his 10th season with the Rams, he recently joined Sean Payton and Ron Rivera as the only coaches to sign a deal with Jordan Brand.
The iconic brand said in a statement: “Recognized as one of the most innovative minds in football, McVay leads with clarity, connection, and an unwavering standard that aligns naturally with the Jumpman ethos. He made history as the youngest head coach ever hired in the NFL and later became the youngest to reach and win a Super Bowl. As only the third coach to join Jordan Brand, McVay brings a powerful new dimension to the family, one rooted in vision, culture building, and championship level excellence. Across the league, he is known for inspiring people, elevating those around him, and setting a tone that others rise to. That spirit, raising the bar, staying consistent, and leading with purpose, reflects the very foundation of Jordan Brand.”
