The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have signed running back SaRodorick Thompson Jr.
Thompson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech by the New Orleans Saints last year. He then wound up on the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent a majority of the 2023 regular season, appearing in one game before being released on Dec. 8.
In his time at Texas Tech, Thompson posted 540 carries for 2,664 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns from 2018-2022.
The Rams’ running back room is already pretty deep with Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Ronnie Rivers, Boston Scott and Zach Evans, so it’s unclear why they felt the need to bring in another one. Perhaps someone is dealing with an undisclosed injury and will be forced to miss some time.
Regardless, Thompson faces an uphill battle to make the Rams’ roster and won’t have much time to impress the coaching staff with only one preseason game to go. The Rams have typically kept four running backs on their roster, which means someone like Evans is even in danger of getting cutting at the end of camp.
Running back depth is never something a team can have too much of though given how many injuries typically happen at the position throughout the course of a season. So even if Thompson doesn’t make the 53-man roster, perhaps the Rams will be able to sign him to the practice squad in order to keep that depth in the organization in case they need him later in the season.
As was the case last year though, Williams is expected to be the team’s workhorse in the backfield. The Rams drafted Corum in the third round though so clearly are very high on what he can add to their running back room.
Rams waive cornerback Jerry Jacobs with injury settlement
In a separate roster move, the Rams also announced that they have waived cornerback Jerry Jacobs with an injury settlement. It’s unclear what injury Jacobs is dealing with but his stay in the organization was a short one after being signed a few weeks ago to add depth to the secondary while others were dealing with injuries of their own.
