Rams Sign Quarterback Jared Goff To Contract Extension

Ever since the Los Angeles Rams drafted quarterback Jared Goff No. 1 overall in 2016 and then hired head coach Sean McVay a year later, they have been building a winning culture.

Goff did not look like a No. 1 overall pick during his rookie season under head coach Jeff Fisher, but in the two seasons since McVay has taken over, he has been named to two Pro Bowls and won two division titles, taking the Rams to the Super Bowl last year.

With Goff only having a couple of years left on his rookie contract, there have been talks between him and the team all offseason about a contract extension. Talks began heating up after the Philadelphia Eagles locked up Carson Wentz long-term as he was the No. 2 pick in 2016 after Goff.

There has been optimism from both the organization and Goff throughout the entire process, and it appears the two sides have been able to get a deal done before the start of the regular season. According to Michael Silver of Sports Illustrated, Goff is signing an extension to keep him with the Rams through 2023:

Rams QB Jared Goff has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the team that drafted him first overall in 2016. He will now be signed through the 2023 season.

The Rams announced the extension shortly after, so it is a done deal. The exact terms of the deal are not yet known, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that it might be record-breaking in terms of guaranteed money:

The #Rams and QB Jared Goff are expected to execute a 4-year deal that is trending toward the largest guarantee in NFL history, source said.

McVay emphasized this past week that Goff’s focus would remain on leading the Rams even if an extension wasn’t able to get done, but it is still nice to see it get taken care of before Los Angeles takes the field this Sunday for their Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

In the last year and change the Rams have now extended Aaron Donald, Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley and now Goff, so the their Super Bowl window does not seem to be closing any time soon.
