This is now the second extension that Higbee has signed with the Rams. He previously signed a four-year, $29 million extension and now gets a bit of a raise for his services.
Originally a fourth-round pick in 2016, Higbee has become one of the team’s most reliable pass catchers and a safety blanket for Matthew Stafford. Higbee was named a team captain for the first time in his career and has so far produced 11 catches for 132 yards through three games this year.
While those numbers may not jump off the page, Higbee plays nearly every snap for Los Angeles as he’s the lone tight end in 11-personnel sets and a key blocker on any designed-run plays. The Rams have tight ends like Brycen Hopkins and Davis Allen on the 53-man roster, but Higbee is by far and away the most reliable of the bunch.
With so much youth and inexperienced players on the roster, the organization must have felt it was right to keep a veteran like Higbee around in order to provide guidance and stability on the roster. So far, L.A. has been competitive in each game but are still clearly finding their way as a unit.
The core of the offense still revolves around Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp, but Higbee’s done enough to consider himself a part of the team’s plans moving forward.
Tyler Higbee feeling better physically in 2023
The past couple of seasons have been tough for Higbee as he dealt with nagging injuries that forced him to miss time. However, heading into 2023 Higbee said physically he felt better compared to last year and so far he’s been able to suit up for each of the Rams’ first three games.
