Coming into the 2023 season, the Los Angeles Rams suffered a couple of losses to the offense. The biggest blow was Cooper Kupp as he suffered a setback with his hamstring injury and was placed on injured reserve. Aside from Kupp, though, the Rams have also been without backup quarterback Stetson Bennett.
Bennett won the backup quarterback job with a solid showing in training camp and preseason, but he then dealt with a shoulder injury and was later moved to the non-football injury/illness list prior to Week 2. In his place, Brett Rypien was brought up from the practice squad and is currently serving as Matthew Stafford’s backup.
Sean McVay didn’t provide any details at the time of the move, but he did recently give an update on how Bennett’s been doing.
“I have, yeah and he’s doing really well, which I was really encouraged to be able to hear. I’m not really sure on a timetable with anything and so that’s been the good thing. I got a chance to hear his voice and he sounds really good and that was really cool to hear.”
It’s unclear what Bennett is going through right now, but he has been away from the team as he sorts out whatever it is. McVay and the organization have been supportive of the former Georgia star though there is still no timetable for his return.
Bennett will have to miss at least three more games until he is eligible to be activated and return to the 53-man roster, but until then, Rypien will continue to be the gameday backup. Rypien started a few games for the Denver Broncos during the 2022 campaign, so he at least has some experience in the event something happens to Stafford.
Without much more information, fans have been hoping for the best for Bennett whom Los Angeles traded up for in the 2023 NFL Draft. Hopefully things resolve soon and that he’s able to come back to the team.

Another expected key piece of the offense was recently dealt away as the Rams traded Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings. L.A. surprisingly made Akers inactive just hours before their Week 2 tilt against the San Francisco 49ers and was traded just days later.
McVay reiterated that the move wasn’t because of any personal issues and even wished the running back the best on his new team.
