After a disappointing 2019 season, the Los Angeles Rams look to be back on track as they have re-dedicated themselves to the run game.

Sean McVay’s offense revolves around the ground attack which sets up the play-action plays he has become widely known for around the NFL. The Rams possess three solid running backs in Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson and recently drafted Cam Akers and have all contributed a quarter of the way through the 2020 season.

While McVay should be credited with how he has utilized his backfield, running backs coach Thomas Brown should also be highlighted as a reason behind their success. Brown has been highly touted by the organization for teaching ability and leadership and is an under-the-radar staff member who has had a hand in the Rams’ 4-1 start.

However, reports came out that Brown recently injured himself during a normal practice session. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it appears he ruptured his Achilles tendon:

It is an unfortunate injury for Brown, but McVay also acknowledged that he will try to coach in their Week 6 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The fact that he will even attempt to remain on the sidelines speaks to his character and commitment to the team, but he will be a welcomed voice for the backs in what should be a tough divisional bout.

Brown’s experience as a coach is fairly limited as he has served on several different collegiate coaching staffs before making his way to the Rams. However, he has worked with notable running backs like Nick Chubb and Melvin Gordon in the past and now Los Angeles is seeing his work pay off with how Brown, Henderson and Akers have looked so far.

Although he will not be able to run drills with the backs on the roster, Brown should still have an important role in the film room and on the field and hopefully continue to elevate the running game for McVay and the offense.
