John Wolford is no stranger to starting games against the Arizona Cardinals as his last start for the Los Angeles Rams came in Week 17 during the 2020 season.

However, Wolford couldn’t replicate the success he had back then as the Rams lost to the Cardinals 27-17 in Week 10 of the 2022 season. It was a rough afternoon for Wolford as he recorded 212 passing yards for one touchdown, but also was intercepted once and lost a fumble.

While Wolford was the primary quarterback, the Rams mixed in fellow backup Bryce Perkins on certain snaps. However, Wolford didn’t seem to be bothered by the back-and-forth on offense.

“I didn’t have much difficulty with it today. It was kind of the plan going in. (QB) Bryce (Perkins) can do…we gave him some opportunities as well. Ultimately, we didn’t do enough to win the game and I don’t think it had much of an impact on me.”

The beginning of the game went fairly well as Wolford was able to lead the offense down the field for a field goal on their first drive. However, the rest of the game was a different story as Los Angeles endured several three-and-outs, especially in the second half. Wolford explained the inefficiency as a product of poor execution.

“It’s cliché, but it’s come down to execution and we had some opportunities on third down that, shot to Allen Robinson, got to stay on the field. That’s what it comes down to. We didn’t execute well enough in those next drives and that’s why we didn’t move the ball.”

This is the worst head coach Sean McVay’s offense has looked since coming to the Rams, and while there are several excuses the team can put forward Wolford’s point about execution stands the truest. Through 10 weeks, this may just be what L.A. looks like the rest of the way which is a massive disappointment for a defending Super Bowl champion.
