It was obviously heartbreaking for the Los Angeles Rams to come up short against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. But if there is one silverlining it is that Rams legend Cooper Kupp, who helped this team win a Super Bowl in 2021-22 alongside Matthew Stafford, gets another opportunity for a ring.
Kupp is one of the most beloved players in recent Rams history and he and Stafford remain close. In fact, after the game Stafford made sure to find Kupp and congratulate him on the victory. And while Stafford won’t be able to win another Super Bowl this year, he does have a very good chance at being named NFL MVP.
Stafford is the favorite to take home the award after an outstanding regular season and his former teammate believes he deserves it. During Super Bowl Media Day, Kupp said it would be incredible for his former teammate to take home that award while adding that people will have a hard time finding many quarterbacks who have been better throughout Stafford’s career, via Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune:
“It would be incredible. He had an unbelievable season and is, I think, very deserving of that award. But his body of work over his career is, whatever you wanna say, whoever wants to pull the statistics and all this other stuff, watch the tape. Watch the tape and find someone better over the last 17 years. Find someone better, you’ll have a hard time doing it.”
As Kupp noted, Stafford has been absolutely outstanding throughout the majority of his career, but it wasn’t until he joined the Rams that he truly began receiving the adulation he deserved. Kupp was able to experience his greatness firsthand and the result was a Super Bowl victory.
Stafford is widely expected to win the MVP award this season, though it has been a very close race between him and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. Stafford led the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns while also throwing just eight interceptions in what was one of the best seasons of his Hall of Fame career.
Additionally, Stafford has already been named a Pro Bowler and an AP First Team All-Pro selection while also winning the PFWA MVP Award.
Sean McVay obviously wants Matthew Stafford to return to the Rams next season
It remains unclear whether Matthew Stafford will continue his career next season, but head coach Sean McVay made it known that if he wants to continue playing, he is welcome back on the Rams.
