Raiders Sign D.J. Swearinger & Dion Jordan; Place Karl Joseph On IR & Waive Quentin Poling

The Oakland Raiders’ fears about safety Karl Joseph‘s injury he suffered in Thursday night’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers were realized as he was placed on IR on Saturday. In additional roster moves, Oakland signed safety D.J. Swearinger and defensive end Dion Jordan while waiving linebacker Quentin Poling.

Joseph made the game-sealing interception of Phillip Rivers in the Raiders’ 36-24 victory but injured his foot on the play. While he was waiting on the results of an MRI, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden did not sound optimistic about Joseph’s injury after the game, so it is not surprising to see him placed on IR.

It is unfortunate, though, as Joseph was having a resurgent season with the Raiders, recording 48 total tackles, one interception, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery in nine games. Oakland did not specify what the exact injury is, but his season is likely coming to an end.

Swearinger will be among the defensive back that replace Joseph. It was reported on Friday that he was signing with the Raiders, bringing a veteran presence to their locker room.

The seventh-year safety was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round in 2013 out of South Carolina. He started off the 2019 season with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played every snap through their first four games, recording 28 total tackles before being released.

Oakland’s pass-rush has really come on in recent weeks with rookies Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell tormenting opposing quarterbacks. That unit will be getting a boost with the addition of Jordan, who is a former No. 3 overall pick out of Oregon.

The Miami Dolphins selected him with a pick that the acquired from the Raiders in 2013, although his career has never really been able to get going due to multiple drug suspensions.

Jordan has 8.5 sacks in 43 career games, but he was last released by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018 after playing 12 games. He is coming off a 10-game suspension and a knee injury but is currently healthy, so the hope is that he will be able to turn his career around with the Raiders.

The Raiders signed Poling off their practice squad before the game against the Chargers, but he played just five snaps in the victory before being waived.
