The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the lives of nearly every individual across the world today. Even if one has not contracted the coronavirus, daily life has become much slower and isolated.

One aspect that has been greatly affected is public institutions. Most schools have shut down until at least May or for the remainder of their school year. High school seniors may have to delay their graduation or skip out on prom, but most of devastating of all has been the lack of meals for students. Many families rely on the public education system to help provide at least one meal for their children.

For the school children of Hawaii, help and food is on the way. According to Christian Shimabuku of KHON-2 News,, newly signed Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota‘s foundation Motiv8 will help provide 1,000 daily meals for two Hawaiian schools:

Marcus Mariota’s Motiv8 foundation, along with the Island Insurance Fund Initiative, will distribute 1,000 meals a day at Kauluwela and Palolo Elementary Schools while schools are shut down due to COVID-19, starting on Monday, March 30.

Public school students aged 18 and under can pick up breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m. while lunch can be picked up at 11:30 a.m. to noon from Monday to Friday. The meals are prepared by ABC Stores for Kauluwela and Bamboo Catering for Palolo.

A total of 300 breakfasts and 300 lunches at Kauluwela, to go with the 200 breakfasts and 200 lunches at Palolo make up the 1,000 daily total.

The Motiv8 Foundation is joined by the Island Insurance Foundation, ABC Stores and Bamboo Catering, creating over $125,000 in funds for the meals being distributed. Meals will be provided every weekday, outside of Good Friday, through April. They will be provided longer should schools not start again by that time.

Mariota grew up in Hawaii and played football throughout high school. He left the island to attend college at the University of Oregon and spent his first five seasons as a pro with the Tennessee Titans. Of course, joining the Raiders puts him as close to Hawaii as he has been during his professional career.

Mariota just recently signed with the Raiders and greatly bolsters their depth at quarterback behind Derek Carr. Mariota understands that he is coming in as backup and that the Raiders are Carr’s team. Las Vegas may also be looking to add another Oregon quarterback product to the mix, as the team was rumored to be communicating with Justin Herbert, a prospect in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft.
