Raiders News: Kolton Miller Feels Offensive Line Did Good Job Containing Khalil Mack, Bears Defense

Although it was far from pretty, the Oakland Raiders enjoyed a successful business trip to London by coming home with a win against the Chicago Bears in Week 5.

One of the biggest storylines going into the game was the reunion between defensive end Khalil Mack and his former team. Given the circumstances, it was safe to say that Mack was looking to enjoy a big day against the Raiders.

Oakland acknowledged that stopping Mack was a big part of their game plan during their win across the pond. Left tackle Kolton Miller was an integral part of their approach to keep quarterback Derek Carr clean.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Miller was happy with the execution against Mack and the rest of the Chicago defense:

“I thought we had a good plan for him and we executed it well,” Miller said. “It was important to slow him down as much as possible. The key there is just being consistent with your technique and fundamentals. I think we were able to do that in the run game and the pass game.”

Miller added that the offensive line as a whole made it a point to step up in Week 5 to protect Derek Carr:

“The entire offensive line took this game as a challenge,” Miller said. “It was a big test for us, and we were able to run the ball and protect the pocket.”

Mack had been his usual dominant self coming into their matchup, however, the Raiders’ game plan managed to slow him down significantly as he finished with three tackles, a fumble recovery, and just one quarterback hit. His numbers were a far cry from the pressure he had generated in previous weeks.

While Mack had his motivation for enjoying a big game, the offensive line had theirs as well. Miller is still trying to help justify the decisions the Raiders have made in recent years while right tackle Trent Brown is clearly intent on providing them with plenty of bang for their buck.

Not only was the offensive line able to keep Mack off Carr’s back, but they also helped running back Josh Jacobs enjoy his best performance yet. The rookie finished with 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 carries against a formidable Bears’ defense that had not even come close to allowing a 100-yard rusher up to that point in the 2019 NFL season.

The Raiders are now hoping to take full advantage of the bye week before coming back to square off against the Green Bay Packers in Week 7.
