Raiders News: Jon Gruden Discusses How Analytics Have Improved Modern Era Of NFL

With the 2020 offseason well underway, the Las Vegas Raiders have lots of options to consider. With some very obvious gaps in their depth chart, it will take some serious work to find upgrades through the draft and free agency.

Luckily, in the last decade, scouting and player grading has become monumentally easier. With the increased use of technology and analytics, coaches and executives can get the most detailed and accurate data on players as needed.

Although more information is available, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden still says that a lot of work goes into their utilization of analytics, via Raiders.com:

“It’s big. I mean the way we study film is far and away improved from what it used to be. Instead of watching a receiver play every play of every game you can just hit a button and see all his targets and watch 113 plays instead of maybe 1,500 plays. You can see a quarterback, every third down throw just like that. Every red zone throw just like that. You want to see a player’s sacks or quarterback hits or pressures, you can put them on a reel. So, it still requires a lot of effort and hard work but analytics and how they are used today is a lot different than what it was two, three, four, 10 years ago that’s for sure.”

There are plenty of advanced stats available to the public via various stat keeping sites, but the information the Raiders are getting has to be even better. Of course, with so much information the Raiders should be better able to narrow down who they want to add to their roster.

Even with an abundance of information, that does not always guarantee an easy choice. One such choice the Raiders brass may have to make will be in regards to their quarterback. The rumors have indicated that the team is interested in Tom Brady.

Of course, Derek Carr had one of his best season’s to date in 2019 while Brady will be turning 43 years old this August. Despite his age, Brady did have another solid season with the New England Patriots, even though the team did not make it past the first round of the playoffs. Having a solid amount of analytics on both players should hopefully give the Raiders an idea of what to expect from each quarterback in 2020, and that’s just one example.
