With Darren Waller missing much of last season due to injury, the Las Vegas Raiders turned to backup tight end Foster Moreau to help fill that void and he would set a career-high in targets (54), receptions (33) and receiving yards (420). Moreau was a free agent this offseason and had visited the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints.

It was the latter of those visits that uncovered an absolutely scary revelation. In the midst of a routine physical being conducted by the Saints medical team, Moreau found out that he has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and announced on Twitter that he will be stepping away from football to fight the cancer:

Through somewhat of a miraculous process, this Free Agency period has been life changing for me. During a routine physical conducted by the Saint’s medical team down in New Orleans, I’ve come to learn that I have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and will be stepping away from football (1/3)

at this time to fight a new opponent: Cancer. I’m grateful for the support and thankful for people who have stood firm with me. There hasn’t been a single step I’ve taken without hundreds of people lighting the path before me, and I will continue to seek their guidance. (2/3)

That being said, I’ll go kick this thing’s ass and get back to doing what I love! AMDG!

Obviously, this is far more important than football and the most important thing is Moreau making a full recovery from this. He certainly has the right attitude and there is no doubt he is going to attack this battle with absolute ferocity.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s germ-fighting immune system. In Hodgkin’s lymphoma, white blood cells grow out of control and cause swollen lymph nodes and growths throughout the body. Thankfully recent advances in the treatment of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma have helped to increase the chances of full recovery for those diagnosed with the disease.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler released a statement following Moreau’s announcement, via Katherine Terrell of ESPN:

“Foster is a tremendous person on and off the football field, and our immediate thoughts and concerns are with him as he begins to battle this new opponent,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler said in a statement Thursday. “We know that the Raiders Family, teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Raider Nation will come together to support Foster and his family through this challenge, and we’re confident that he will get back doing what he loves most soon.”

We all wish Moreau the best and a speedy recovery in this process.
