Raiders’ Jon Gruden On Brother Jay Gruden Getting Fired By Redskins: ‘Welcome To The Club, Bro’

Heading into their Week 6 bye week, the Oakland Raiders have to be feeling good about where they currently stand as they are coming off an impressive 24-21 victory over the Chicago Bears.

The Raiders were without some key players like Tyrell Williams, who is battling a foot injury, and Vontaze Burfict, who is currently suspended for the remainder of the season after his hit on Jack Doyle in Week 4. However, Oakland ruled the battle in the trenches and rookie running back Josh Jacobs gashed Chicago on the ground with his 26 carries for 123 rushing yards.

Sitting at 3-2, Jon Gruden’s Raiders are real contenders for a playoff spot in the AFC given how things have shaken out in recent weeks. However, Gruden’s brother Jay was recently let go by the Washington Redskins after they were beaten down by the New England Patriots to drop to 0-5 on the year.

According to Jerry McDonald of Oakland Tribune, Gruden dodged any inquiries about hiring his brother to join him in the Bay Area but joked about him getting fired:

Gruden wouldn’t speculate on brother Jay joining him with Raiders. ‘Got a lot of respect for my brother obviously and disappointed for him getting fired. But my dad’s been fired, I’ve been fired, Jay’s been fired. Welcome to the club, bro.’ #RaidersNation

Jay Gruden was given a raw deal this season as the Redskins lacked talent in every phase of the game, particularly at quarterback where long-time backup Case Keenum largely struggled to begin the year coupled with an inexperienced rookie in Dwayne Haskins. It was widely rumored throughout the NFL that Gruden was coaching for his job given the team’s dispiriting start and the loss to New England was enough for Washington owner Dan Snyder to pull the plug.

As things currently stand, it is hard to imagine Jay Gruden joining his brother in Oakland given that the Raiders head coach is largely responsible for the play design and scheme they run, giving him less opportunity to show off what he can do with talented offensive players.

The younger Gruden brother should not find himself unemployed for too long, however, as he has shown he has a knack for playcalling and getting the most out of his players.

Speculation about where Jay Gruden could end up will likely ramp up once the 2019 NFL season concludes given that some head coaches or offensive coordinators could be let go. While nothing appears imminent, expect the two brothers to be linked to each other until Jay Gruden has found his new coaching home.
