Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is well-regarded around the NFL for his work with quarterbacks, though there have been rumblings that things between him and Derek Carr have not always been the most pleasant.
The head coach-quarterback relationship is one of the most pivotal in football and often times will determine how well a team does. Although there have been some whispers that Gruden and Carr are cordial with each other, there have not been any reported incidents between the two and could be the by-product of the losing seasons the two have already endured together.
Gruden and Carr are heading into their fourth season together and have seen some steady improvement since the former came back to the Silver and Black. In an appearance on “The NFL Rhodes Show with Lindsay Rhodes,” general manager Mike Mayock gave his point of view on Gruden and Carr’s relationship as transcribed by Adam Hill of Las Vegas Review-Journal:
“They’re definitely on the same page. Derek is even finishing Jon’s sentences now,” Mayock said. “It’s like a corny marriage. It’s really funny.”
Mayock has also been impressed with how well Carr has been able to memorize what Gruden has thrown at him:
“I don’t know if Derek has a photographic memory or not, but his memory is mind-boggling,” Mayock said. “Jon puts a lot on his plate and he handles it seamlessly. The two seasons I’ve been here, he’s gotten better each year. I’m excited to see where he can take this thing.”
Gruden’s West Coast-style offense can be a lot to digest for some, but it sounds like Carr has been able to adapt, and that has shown as he has looked more and more comfortable running the team. As far as their relationship goes, it is encouraging to hear that the two are getting along and understanding each other better.
Gruden and Carr have to be in lockstep with each other if the Raiders hope to make the playoffs, so it will be exciting to see what the pairing accomplishes during the 2021 season.
