This offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers made it a priority to get younger and more athletic. In working to achieve that goal, the team received an entirely new look by bringing in four new players, one being Quentin Grimes.

Grimes possesses an interesting skill set and could be viewed as an upgrade from Luke Kennard, in terms of having the ability to self-create and apply rim pressure. In addition, he knows head coach JJ Redick very well and he shared a story about going to the Hamptons to train with Redick.

“I literally DM’d him and I was like, ‘Yo, I want to get some work in with you this summer. Let me know anytime that’s available for you, I’ll make it work and I’ll come out there,’” Grimes said on an episode of “The Young Man and the Three.”

“And he hit me like right away and was like, ‘Yo, I’m so down to work with you.’ And we set up a time, he had me come out to, what’s the spot? The Hamptons, out there and he let me stay in his guest house with him. We worked out for two days and the work that he does is unreal just knowing that how good of a shooter he is. He knew right away some of the little things with my footwork, if I had an injury he was like, ‘Did you hurt your knee?’

“I was like, ‘Yeah, how the hell you know that?’ He could tell that I was coming down on a pin down and stuff like that. So, working out with him was just great and I worked out with him a couple times in Brooklyn before the season, before my third year.

“And he’s just like a wizard of the game and he just knows the ins and outs of it, how to come off certain screens. It was just amazing for sure.”

For Grimes’ career, he is a 36.6% 3-point shooter and the hope is that ticks up closer to 40% playing alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Redick loves to run sets to get his shooters some easy looks, as demonstrated with Kennard when he was acquired last season.

Throughout the rest of this summer, Redick and Grimes will likely spend lots of time together so the 26-year-old guard can prepare for his first season in L.A. With roster moves still needing to be made, it remains to be seen whether Grimes will be a starter, but his scoring will be a big need for this team.

It is a new era for the Lakers, as they are now building around Luka Doncic and have made a flurry of moves that reflect that thus far. With Grimes having a relationship with Doncic dating back to their time in Dallas, it appears that the former also grew up a Lakers fan, as he posted a picture of his younger self wearing purple and gold gear after his reported signing was announced.
