The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced Orel Hershiser is going to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a ceremony in August.
Hershiser’s Hollywood star is coming in the sports entertainment category. The former Los Angeles Dodgers World Series champion is poised to become the 2,853rd star on the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Dodgers organization received one on June 20, 2008, becoming the first sports franchise honored by the Hollywood Historic Trust and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The Dodgers’ Award of Excellence star was added to the area that includes a wide collection of real and fictional celebrities who have made a significant impact on the entertainment industry. Ana Martinez-Holler of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said at the time the Dodgers received the star in recognition of their contributions to Los Angeles and world culture and entertainment.
Orel Hershiser Walk of Fame ceremony
Hershiser will formally have his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame unveiled during a ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 13. It’s scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. PT with longtime broadcaster Bob Costas is serving as emcee of the ceremony, and guest speakers include Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis, manager Dave Roberts, Jaime Jarrín and Clayton Kershaw.
Hershiser’s star is going to be located at 6755 Hollywood Boulevard, which is an ode to career accomplishments. The “67” pays tribute to Hershiser’s scoreless innings streak that reached 59 during the regular season and saw him add eight more during the 1988 National League Championship Series.
Hershiser set the MLB record for longest scoreless streak by surpassing Don Drysdale’s mark on Sept. 28, 1988. Fittingly, Drysdale was on the call when Hershiser pitched 10 scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres to set a new record.
As for the “55” in the address of Hershiser’s star, that of course represents his jersey number.
The Dodgers have not retired No. 55, but in 2023 he was inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball.
Orel Hershiser’s career
The Dodgers drafted Hershiser in 1979, and the right-hander went on to make his MLB debut four years later. Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda gave Hershiser the “Bulldog” nickname during his rookie season in 1984, which remains to this day.
Hershiser spent 13 of 18 seasons with the Dodgers. His career with the Dodgers included three All-Star Game selections, a Cy Young Award, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger, among other accolades.
Along with being instrumental in helping the Dodgers win the 1988 World Series, Hershiser arguably is most remembered as the only player in MLB history to win a Cy Young Award along with both NLCS and World Series MVP honors in the same season.
Hershiser now is one of the original SportsNet LA broadcast members who remain with the network since it launched in 2014.
