Flames looking to shake things up but nothing imminent

TSN: Bob McKenzie said last night that though some of the Calgary Flames players might be grumbling about head coach Bill Peters, there is no reason to believe there will be a coaching change anytime soon. The Flames are looking to make move though.

“General Manager Brad Treliving is trying to shake things up with a trade, but nothing is imminent on that front.”

Darren Dreger adds that there is going to be some speculation regarding some Flames players.

“… yes there is ongoing speculation of the availability of certain players like (Mark) Jankowski, (Oliver) Kylington, and (Michael) Frolík for a long time, but Brad Treliving continues to work at the future of the Flames operation as well. I’m looking specifically at Travis Hamonic; they met prior to the start of the regular season, I don’t think the player liked how the conversation went.”

GM Treliving met with Hamonic’s agent and there is no rush from Hamonic’s side of things. He could be a deadline trade option or the Flames can keep and hope for a deep playoff run.

TSN Hockey: Ray Ferraro on his and Dreger’s podcast: “I think (GM) Brad Treliving has to make a move. But here’s the problem – they’re absolutely capped out…their roster is just falling apart…”

Could Flames consider moving Gaudreau?

Darren Hayes of The Athletic: Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau is struggling, and his frustration is mounting. This dates back to the end of last season.

Is it time that the Flames consider the idea of trading him? Trading him wouldn’t mean they are rebuilding as they are loaded with young players.

The team is struggling and a change of core may be needed, and it may start with one of the players who is struggling the most.

GM Treliving could explore trade possibilities for current, not future assets.

Gaudreau is coming off a 99 point season and has two years left at a $6.75 million cap hit. His modified no-trade clause doesn’t go into effect until 2021-22.

  • Darren Hayes: “I’d like to add context to my column on whether Calgary should explore a Gaudreau trade.
  • Lost on some readers is this was not a demand that they trade him. In fact, I wouldn’t. Or not yet, anyway. The intention was merely to provoke thought and stir debate on the merits of such.”
