NFL Free Agency Rumors: Blake Bortles To Meet With Rams After Being Waived By Jaguars

With Sean Mannion being an unrestricted free agent, the Los Angeles Rams are currently in search of a backup for quarterback Jared Goff for the 2019 season.

The Rams have not shown much interest in retaining their former third-round draft pick who has only started one game in four seasons with the team, so the solution at the backup quarterback position could come from outside the organization.

One option is Blake Bortles, who was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason after they decided to sign Nick Foles. According to Michael Silver of NFL Network, Bortles is expected to meet with the Rams on Monday:

Bortles started 73 of a possible 80 games for the Jaguars the last five seasons, but has been a bit disappointing considering how highly-touted he was coming out of Central Florida before being drafted.

The 26-year-old is just one year removed from taking the Jaguars to the AFC Championship game, although he struggled for much of the 2018 season which led to him being benched in favor of Cody Kessler.

In 13 games in 2018, Bortles threw for 2,718 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing a career-high 60.3 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 365 yards and a touchdown on 58 carries.

If the meeting goes well then it would not be all that surprising to see Bortles sign with the Rams this upcoming week. Working with Goff, Sean McVay and the rest of the Rams staff could be exactly what Bortles needs to revive his career.
