Los Angeles Dodgers teammates Mookie Betts and Trea Turner were voted among the National League starters for the 2022 MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.
This year represents the first time the Dodgers have multiple position players starting in an All-Star Game since 1980. That year, when the event was also held at Dodger Stadium, fans voted in Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Reggie Smith and Bill Russell as starters.
Betts was in position to secure a starting spot in the NL lineup by way of being a leading vote-getter, but he was overtaken by the Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. during the final days of Phase 1.
Nevertheless, Betts has earned a sixth career All-Star Game selection. They have come consecutively when the Midsummer Classic has been held. However, this year is the first time Betts is participating as a Dodgers All-Star.
He was also voted in last season but withdrew from the event at Coors Field in favor of rest and recovery from nagging injuries.
Turner also is appearing in the All-Star Game as a member of the Dodgers for the first time and second overall selection. He participated in the festivities last year prior to getting traded by the Washington Nationals.
Turner had been the leading vote-getter among NL shortstops for most updates, but needed a late push to stave off Dansby Swanson of the Braves. Turner finished with 52% of the vote to 48% for Swanson.
Will other Dodgers make 2022 All-Star Game?
Betts and Turner could be joined by Freddie Freeman once NL reserves for the All-Star Game are announced. Tyler Anderson, Tony Gonsolin, Clayton Kershaw and Julio Urías also figure to be among the pitchers who will receive consideration as well.
There’s been a push to have Kershaw selected for a first career All-Star Game start, though Braves manager Brian Snitker has not indicated if he is open to such.
