Los Angeles Lakers All-Star LeBron James and his agent Rich Paul have created an empire at Klutch Sports, not only in the basketball world, but all sports.
Within the last year, Klutch has expanded to the NFL, where they represent two of the top three picks in the 2020 NFL Draft in Chase Young and Jeff Okudah. The agency also purchased Tidal Sports Group, who represents a number of Major League Baseball players, with the most notable being Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.
Bregman made headlines this week when he decided to part ways with long-time agent Brodie Scoffield. The reason for his departure was unknown, although it has now been revealed.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Bregman decided to leave the agency due to James’ media company Uninterrupted deciding to do a docuseries on the Astros’ recent sign-stealing scandal:
The involvement of James’ media platform Uninterrupted in a new docuseries on the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal was perhaps not the only reason Bregman left Brodie Scoffield, whose company last month became the baseball arm of James’ agency, Klutch Sports. But the sources said it was an overriding factor — at the very least, the last straw.
Uninterrupted, part of James’ budding media empire, is a separate entity from Klutch. One source, however, said Bregman felt angry and betrayed Scoffield put him in a position in which a fellow Klutch client — the biggest star in the NBA — would help develop a series focusing on the darkest moment of his career.
Uninterrupted recently announced its partnering with The Cinemart to produce the Astros’ series that they are tentatively calling “Sign Language,” on a short-form content platform called Quibi.
While James and Scoffield are taking the fall for this, it’s unlikely that either of them have very much involvement in the creation of the docuseries itself.
Judging by Bregman’s reaction, it’s also unlikely that any current Astros players will be involved as well, which should make for an interesting story.
The Astros were found guilty by MLB this past winter of electronic sign-stealing during their 2017 World Series run in which they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. No players were punished for their role in the scandal, however, and the Astros get to keep their championship trophy, which led to some outrage throughout the league.
Many players and fans still have sour feelings towards the Astros players and organization, and the flame should only be ignited even more once the docuseries is released.
