MLB Rumors: 2020 All-Star Game At Dodger Stadium To Potentially Be Cancelled To Allow For Longer Season

3 Min Read

Major League Baseball is currently in uncharted territory as the start of the 2020 season has been delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Opening Day was supposed to take place on Thursday for the Los Angeles Dodgers and teams across the league, although that obviously did not happen as there is no telling when baseball will be played this year.

MLB is in the process of determining how to get as close to a full season in as possible, and they recently came to an agreement with the MLB Players Association on the best way to move forward.

While it’s unlikely that there will be a full 162-game regular season in 2020, it seems MLB is committed to still playing a significant number. One way to do that likely will be eliminating the 2020 MLB All-Star Game, which was set to take place at Dodger Stadium, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post:

The agreement includes a promise to begin immediately discussing an accelerated spring training schedule, split doubleheaders for the regular season, expanded rosters, potential elimination of the All-Star Game and extending the regular season into October.

The last time the All-Star Game took place at Dodger Stadium was in 1980, so this is obviously very unfortunate news if it ends up happening. It makes sense for MLB to do it though, as regular-season games should come first.

In preparation for hosting the Midsummer Classic, the Dodgers have put $100 million into renovations at Dodger Stadium over the offseason. Construction is expected to be fully completed whenever the Dodgers take the field in 2020.

If the All-Star Game doesn’t take place at Dodger Stadium in 2020, it may be a couple of years before it comes back to L.A. The Atlanta Braves are set to host the game in 2021 at their new ballpark, but no one has been awarded 2022 yet, so it makes sense for the Dodgers to get that year.

The most important thing right now is for everyone to stay safe and stay inside, or else the 2020 MLB season could be in danger of being cancelled altogether.
