Matthew Stafford & Brock Purdy Will Make NFL History When Rams Host 49ers In Week 2

The Los Angeles Rams showed the league that they should be taken more seriously as they managed to upset the Seattle Seahawks on the road in Week 1.

The shorthanded Rams were neck-and-neck with the Seahawks in the first half, but they completely dominated the game after halftime. Los Angeles held Seattle to just 12 total yards of offense in the second half while Matthew Stafford and the receivers carved up their rivals on the other side.

Not many people expected the Rams to start 1-0, but those same doubters are back for Week 2 as Los Angeles comes home to face the San Francisco 49ers.

The two teams have had several competitive games against each other over the years, but this upcoming matchup will be special as the quarterbacks Stafford and Brock Purdy will make history, via Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network:

Sunday’s @49ers@RamsNFL game will mark the first time we’ve ever seen a QB taken #1 overall in the @NFL Draft face a QB selected with the last overall pick.

Stafford was taken No. 1 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions after a successful college career at Georgie. On the flip side, the 49ers took Brock Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, though that selection looks like a massive steal considering how the second-year quarterback has looked in his short career so far.

Signal callers like Purdy taken late in the draft oftentimes either end up as career back ups or don’t make it to the NFL at all, but in his case he’s been a revelation for San Francisco. There have been numerous battles over the years of No. 1 quarterbacks going up against each other, but this unique circumstance is arguably even more impressive.

It’s an intriguing subplot to what will surely be another tense game between rivals as there’s no love lost on either side. Although Los Angeles came out victorious against Seattle, San Francisco is a different beast.

Sean McVay proud of Rams’ resilience in win against Seahawks

The Rams were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Sean McVay recommitted to coaching the franchise. McVay knew he would be coming back to a stripped down roster, but so far has done well to stay even-keeled.

His patience rewarded him as he saw his team go out and fight through adversity to beat the Seahawks. Afterwards, he expressed how proud he was of the players and how they were able to step up when called upon.
