The Miami Marlins secured a 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at loanDepot Park, thanks to a bases-loaded single from Jesús Sánchez in the 10th inning. The win marked Miami’s fifth walk-off victory of the season and ended Los Angeles’s recent hot streak, which had seen the Dodgers win eight of their previous nine games.
Entering the game, sportsbooks had the Dodgers as moderate road favorites, with most lines placing Los Angeles around -140 on the moneyline, while the Marlins were priced at approximately +120. The over-under for the matchup hovered near 8.5 runs, which ultimately exceeded as the teams combined for nine total runs over 10 innings.
The game began with both starting pitchers holding their own through the early innings. Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin allowed two runs on four hits over five innings while striking out eight batters. His counterpart, Cal Quantrill, pitched effectively for Miami, going five innings and surrendering just one run on four hits while striking out six.
Los Angeles scored in the first inning with an RBI single from Freddie Freeman, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. However, the Marlins answered in the fifth when Liam Hicks delivered a two-run home run off Gonsolin, giving Miami a 2-1 advantage.
That lead was short-lived, as the Dodgers responded in the sixth inning with solo home runs from Shohei Ohtani and Freeman. Both long balls came off Marlins reliever Anthony Veneziano and shifted the momentum back to Los Angeles. But Miami had an answer in the bottom half of the sixth, retaking the lead with an RBI double by Connor Norby and a run-scoring single from Dane Myers to move ahead 4-3.
Ohtani, who continues to shine at the plate, tied the game again in the seventh inning with a run-scoring double. With Ohtani standing at third and first base open, the Marlins elected to pitch to Freeman, a decision that paid off as reliever Calvin Faucher struck him out to end the inning. Freeman entered the game with impressive numbers during his hitting streak, and his home run in the sixth inning gave him 42 career homers against the Marlins, surpassing Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Howard for the most by any player against the franchise.
The game remained tied through the ninth inning, sending it into extras. In the top of the 10th, Los Angeles could not capitalize with the automatic runner on second. In the bottom half, Xavier Edwards began at second and advanced to third when Kyle Stowers intentionally walked, and Agustin Ramirez followed with a single. Facing a five-man infield alignment, Sánchez delivered a sharp line drive up the middle to bring home Edwards and end the game.
Jesús Tinoco earned the win for Miami with two scoreless innings of relief. Dodgers reliever J.P. Feyereisen took the loss after allowing the decisive hit in the 10th inning. The loss dropped his record to 0-2.
The series concludes Wednesday afternoon. The Dodgers have not yet announced a starting pitcher, while the Marlins will send right-hander Valente Bellozo to the mound. Bellozo enters the contest with a 0-2 record and a 4.97 earned run average. Miami will look to take the series while Los Angeles hopes to rebound and continue its strong road trip.
