The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League West title by defeating the San Diego Padres in the rubber match at Dodger Stadium, and with that secured a first-round bye in the 2024 MLB postseason field.

Due to holding a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Milwaukee Brewers and current NL standings, the Dodgers were guaranteed one of the top two records in the league so long as they won the division.

Now officially NL West champions, the Dodgers are due to host Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday, Oct. 5. Game 2 at Dodger Stadium is scheduled for Oct. 6. If necessary, the NLDS would return to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Friday, Oct. 11.

This season is the Dodgers’ 11th NL West title amid a streak of 12 consecutive postseason appearances. It’s also the 11th consecutive full season the Dodgers have won at least 90 games.

Although the Dodgers had their streak of consecutive NL West titles snapped at eight by the San Francisco Giants in 2021, the franchise is in the midst of a historic stretch.

In 2016, the Dodgers became the first team in MLB history to win the NL West in four consecutive seasons since the Divisional Era began in 1969. Overall, the Dodgers’ streak of eight trailed only the Atlanta Braves (14) and New York Yankees (nine) for most division titles in a row since 1969.

During that time, Dave Roberts set a managerial record by guiding the Dodgers to an NL West title in each of his first five seasons. In 2019, Roberts became the first manager in MLB history to lead his team to a division title in each of his first four full seasons.

Roberts previously joined Tommy Lasorda (1977) as the only rookie managers in Dodgers history to lead a team to the division title.

What’s next for Dodgers after NL West title?

Still undecided and of note for the Dodgers is which team will finish with the best record in baseball. The Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians all remain mathematically alive to secure home-field advantage through the World Series.

Of course, with that would come homefield for the NL Championship Series.
