LeBron James just finished his eighth season with the Los Angeles Lakers, the most consecutive years he has played with any team in his 23-year NBA career. And throughout his time with the franchise, there has been a ton of moments and memories that he will forever love and cherish.
But James has always been about winning more than anything else so when it comes down to it, that 2020 NBA Championship still stands above the rest when it comes to memories in a Lakers uniform.
“There’s a lot. Obviously winning a championship in 2020 stands at the top,” James said after the Lakers’ season came to an end. “That was the reason why I came here. To restore that level of play and restore this franchise back to what it was known for of winning championships and playing at a high level. To be out there with that group, go out there and win a championship and compete at a championship level, was something I envisioned. That will stand at the top, for sure.”
When James joined the Lakers in 2018, they were coming off five consecutive losing seasons, the most in the history of the franchise, and his first season in purple and gold didn’t end that streak either. But the front office made a bunch of moves in the 2019 offseason, including trading for big man Anthony Davis, and the Lakers took off that following season.
That Lakers team, led by James and Davis, but also featuring an outstanding cast of role players including Alex Caruso, Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and many others, looked like championship favorites throughout the season. And even though things took an unforeseeable turn with the coronavirus (COVID-19) shutdown, the Lakers came together in the bubble to go on a great run and hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
James has had so many memories with the Lakers including breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record, and sharing the court with his son Bronny James, just to name a couple. But as he said, his initial goal when he came to this franchise was to return the Lakers to their former glory and he did just that.
LeBron James happy to go into offseason without needing rehab
It is still unclear whether James will continue his career and play a 24th NBA season and he will have a big decision to make as to where he will play should he choose to return. But one thing that James is very happy about this summer is that he doesn’t need rehab on any lingering issues going into the offseason.
