Since Mark Walter took over as majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, the organization has invested in its infrastructure in order to improve on the margins.
The NBA is a salary cap league so there are only so many ways you can improve your roster in a given transaction period. There is no cap on front office executives though, and that is one area the Lakers are looking to improve. Their latest hiring is former New Orleans Pelicans executive Dominic Samangy to be a basketball analyst, as he took to social media to announce:
I’m honored to be joining the Los Angeles Lakers organization as a Basketball Analyst. Thank you to Coach Redick, the coaching staff and the front office for believing in me !! pic.twitter.com/Fwxm0gFtd7

The Lakers have made a number of hirings this offseason on the business side, as well as in their front office. Rob Pelinka made it clear at the start of the offseason that the organization would be hiring two assistant general managers to work under him, one that will be in charge of data and analytics and the other in charge of the draft and player development.
Earlier this offseason, the Lakers announced the hiring of Rohan Ramadas to be one of their assistant general managers on the analytics side, although they are still in search of the second one. Ramadas also came from the Pelicans organization, so perhaps he suggested that the Lakers take a look at Samangy as well.
According to his LinkedIn page, Samangy is a “basketball analytics professional with experience spanning in-game coaching and adjustments, analytical infrastructure development, and front office operations, including draft meetings and trade discussions — across the New Orleans Pelicans, University of Arkansas, and Syracuse University Men’s Basketball programs.”
He comes highly regarded across the basketball analytics community and should only help further improve the Lakers’ front office moving forward. Walter leading into analytics when he first bought the Dodgers, and it appears he is now taking the same approach with the Lakers.
Lakers projected to take center in the 2026 NBA Draft
The first area of focus for Samangy will likely be the 2026 NBA Draft, which is taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The Lakers hold the 25th pick in the first round, and rival executives are all expecting them to take a center if they keep it.
