In a shocking development, the Washington Nationals reportedly are open to a Juan Soto trade ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline after he rejected a 15-year, $440 million contract extension.

At just 23 years old, Soto is already thought of as one of the most feared offensive players in the league. His resume includes the 2020 batting title, two Silver Slugger Awards and being a key contributor during the Nationals’ 2019 World Series title run.

It isn’t every day a player of Soto’s caliber becomes available, and several contenders are lining up for the opportunity to acquire him.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY, the Los Angeles Dodgers are among a handful of teams who have been involved in early trade talks involving Soto:

The Washington #Nats have begun fielding preliminary offers for Juan Soto, with seven teams already weighing in, including 3 in the NL West:#Mariners#Padres#SFGiants#Dodgers#STLCards#Yankees#Mets.
The trade deadline is Aug. 2, but Nats will wait unless get the right deal

With Soto still under team control for two and a half years, the Nationals will surely be seeking a historic haul in order to part with their young superstar.

Dependent on the Dodgers’ potential willingness to take on salary from the Nationals, they would likely need to assemble a trade package that includes a combination of Diego Cartaya, Bobby Miller, Miguel Vargas, Michael Busch, Ryan Pepiot and Andy Pages.

The Dodgers and Nationals aligned on a blockbuster last year that sent Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to L.A. at the trade deadline.

Dodgers fans chanted for Soto at 2022 MLB All-Star Game

Soto appeared off the bench for the National League team during the 2022 MLB All-Star Game and was treated to a “future Dodger” chant from Dodgers fans sitting in the outfield pavilion.

Soto flashed a grin at the fans before realizing the inning had ended and sprinting toward the dugout.
