Jake LaRavia worked his way into a consistent rotation spot in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers last year. However, he struggled mightily, particularly with his shooting, down the stretch and into the postseason, ultimately being mostly phased out by the end of the Lakers’ playoff run.
Now coming into his second season with the team, LaRavia has somewhat been forgotten when it comes to this battle for rotation minutes amongst all the wings the Lakers have this season. This competition amongst everyone on the roster has led to a very intense training camp so far, something that LaRavia is loving.
“I don’t believe so, but this has been a very physical, competitive, intense training camp,” LaRavia said when asked if he’d ever been part of a training camp like this. “I think it’s been the best one that I’ve been a part of since I’ve been in the league and this third day really just put a stamp on what we’ve been doing.”
When asked what specifically has made this training camp so great, LaRavia noted the commitment and willingness to sacrifice from everyone on the roster.
“Just I feel like how committed everyone is,” LaRavia added. “Obviously this is a very new group of people on this team and it just seems everyone is committed to the same goal. [Rob Pelinka] and JJ [Redick] kinda talked to us about what they’re wanting from us this year and I think everyone’s bought in and willing to sacrifice what it is for us to succeed.”
For a roster that many are questioning whether it stacks up to the top teams in the NBA, having that buy-in is notable and important. Everyone must be on the same page, locked in together in order to challenge those elite teams and everyone on this Lakers team is willing to do whatever is necessary.
Redick has spoken about how everyone will be receiving opportunities to contribute at different points this year so there is no doubt that LaRavia will have his chances to make an impact. And if he and the rest of the Lakers can take this training camp energy into the season, they could very well surprise many across the league.
Jake LaRavia used offseason to reflect on last season’s struggles
To his credit, LaRavia didn’t run from or hide from the fact that he was not great for L.A. as last season went on. And he used this offseason to reflect and, ultimately, improve from his struggles.
