Teoscar Hernández broke a scoreless tie with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. The win capped a come-from-behind effort for the National League West leaders and secured the series win.
The Dodgers entered the game as moderate betting favorites, listed at approximately -145 on the moneyline, while the Diamondbacks came in at around +125 with right-hander Corbin Burnes on the mound. The run total was projected at 7.5, and the teams combined for four runs in a tightly contested matchup.
Burnes had been dominant in recent outings and carried a streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings into the start. The right-hander continued his sharp form early, retiring the first 11 Dodgers hitters and not allowing a hit until Freddie Freeman singled with two outs in the fourth. Burnes remained in control until the sixth inning, when Miguel Rojas and Mookie Betts each singled to set the stage for Hernández.
On a two-strike pitch, Hernández sent a 413-foot drive to straightaway center field, his home run snapping Burnes’ scoreless streak and giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. It was Los Angeles’ 18th come-from-behind win of the season and provided all the offense they would need on a night where pitching was the focus.
Burnes remained in the game through seven innings, finishing with three earned runs allowed on four hits. He struck out eight but took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year and seeing his three-start winning streak come to an end.
Dustin May delivered a strong performance for the Dodgers, ending his three-game losing skid with six solid innings. The right-hander allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out eight and walking none. His lone blemish came in the fourth inning when Ketel Marte launched a 425-foot solo home run to right-center field, briefly giving Arizona a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers’ bullpen held the lead after May’s departure. Tanner Scott pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 10th save of the season, preserving the two-run margin. The team improved to 19-9 at home and 6-5 during the month of May.
Shohei Ohtani went hitless in four plate appearances with two strikeouts. He made headlines late in the game when a hard foul ball struck a security guard in right field as the man attempted to jump over the wall to retrieve the ball. The guard was briefly checked but remained on duty.
The Diamondbacks will return to action Friday, beginning a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Zac Gallen, who enters with a 3-5 record and a 5.14 earned run average, is scheduled to start for Arizona.
The Dodgers will open a weekend series on the road against the New York Mets. Left-hander Clayton Kershaw is expected to make his second start of the season after returning from injury. He currently holds an 11.25 ERA in limited action.
