Hall of Fame Broadcaster Vin Scully Pays Tribute To Raiders Legend John Madden

The NFL world is in mourning as Hall of Fame coach-turned broadcaster John Madden passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 85.

Madden compiled a 103-32-7 record in 10 seasons as the Oakland Raiders head coach, leading the franchise to seven AFC Championship games and one Super Bowl title in 1977.

For as impressive as his coaching career was, Madden arguably made his biggest mark on football as a broadcaster. He was a staple in the booth for three decades, educating millions of fans and covering 11 Super Bowls for four networks from 1979 to 2009.

Legendary broadcaster Vin Scully was among those to pay tribute to Madden on social media, reflecting on their brief partnership and how he learned from him while calling NFL games:

I was saddened to hear about the passing of John Madden, at age 85. One the all-time greats, he showed me the ropes during our brief football partnership. He was always kind and delightful. He can now join his former partner, Pat Summerall, in calling Super Bowls in heaven.

While Scully is best known for his six decades of being the Los Angeles Dodgers play-by-play announcer, he also called NFL games for CBS Sports from 1975-82.

Scully teamed up with Madden, Sonny Jurgensen and Jim Brown, among others, during his time as a football broadcaster before solely focusing on baseball.

In addition to the impact he made as a head coach and broadcaster, Madden will also be remembered for being the face of one of the most iconic video game franchises in the history of gaming — Madden NFL Football by EA Sports.

In the wake of his death, Fox Sports announced the “All Madden” documentary, which premiered on Christmas Day, will re-air Tuesday night on FS1. The network is showing the special again on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. PT.
