In the time after Dustin May was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right flexor pronator strain, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Gavin Stone was the likely candidate to start in his place on Monday.
That didn’t come as much of a surprise, considering the Dodgers’ options to replace May, but Roberts also stopped short of confirming the prospect would take the mound in the series opener against the Atlanta Braves.
Roberts since has committed to Stone starting at Truist Park and indicated he will remain part of the Dodgers rotation moving forward, according to David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio

Stone made his MLB debut May 3 against a talented Philadelphia Phillies lineup and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings. He issued two walks and managed to collect just one strikeout while not having full command of a high-grade changeup.
Stone had a shaky 2023 debut with Triple-A Oklahoma City but has largely settled in since that time. He still owns an inflated 4.04 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in eight starts for OKC.
The 24-year-old did impress his last time out, setting a season high with 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings while allowing just three runs (two earned) in a no-decision.
Stone’s start with the Dodgers will be on an extra day of rest.
How many starts will Gavin Stone make for Dustin May?
With May expected to be out for at least the next month while recovering from a pronator strain that is being treated with a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection, Stone figures to make a minimum of three starts in his place.
He’ll be followed in the Dodgers rotation this week by Bobby Miller, who is making his MLB debut against the Braves.
