After a successful homestand that unfortunately ended with a Dustin May injury, the Los Angeles Dodgers began a season-long road trip comprised of matchups against the St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays.
The resurgent Cardinals were a different team than the one that was swept at Dodger Stadium from April 28-30, the Braves sat atop the National League standings, and Rays held the best record in baseball.
The Dodgers lost three of four to the Cardinals before rebounding to win two games against the Braves. Their road trip then concluded with losing two of three to the MLB-leading Rays.
Although the Dodgers were only 4-6 on their road trip, Freddie Freeman believes their level of play exceeded the sub-.500 record, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group
“A slugfest we lost by one run — those games are not what we expected at 11:35,” said Freddie Freeman.
“It feels like we played a lot better than 4-6, in my opinion. A lot of games that could have been lost a whole lot of different ways, and we came back and kept fighting and fighting. Longest trip of the year. It’s over. I just like the fact we kept grinding every single game this whole road trip.”
Freeman was a standout performer during the road trip and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Freeman had seven multi-hit games while on the road, and was 18-for-41 (.439) with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and nine RBI to go along with a 1.360 on-base plus slugging percentage during the 10 games.
Further to Freeman’s point, the Dodgers scored at least five runs in eight of the road games. Their offense helped mask some of the team’s pitching struggles and ease the burden rookies faced Gavin Stone and Bobby Miller faced in their respective starts.
Dodgers standings update
Even with the losing record while on the road, the Dodgers remain atop the NL West and are just a half-game back of the Braves for best record in the league.
