The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Emmet Sheehan and optioned Bobby Miller back to Triple-A Oklahoma City before their game against the Cincinnati Reds on Labor Day.
Sheehan is making a spot start in the wake of Eric Lauer being placed on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation. It marks the right-hander’s first start at the Major League level since Aug. 2.
Given Lauer’s injury, it’s possible that Sheehan receives multiple starting opportunities with the Dodgers. Particularly with Shohei Ohtani unlikely to pitch again this year and manager Dave Roberts suggesting the focus for Gavin Stone is more on 2027.
Sheehan is just 4-8 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 95.1 innings across 20 starts so far with L.A. this season. However, he has looked like a different pitcher since being demoted to Triple-A at the beginning of August.
In four starts with the Comets, Sheehan is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP while holding opponents to a .161 batting average. He struck out 24 batters and walked seven over 18 innings pitched.
Sheehan was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month for August, which followed the 26-year-old earning PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for Aug. 17-23. During the period he was recognized for, Sheehan led the PCL in WHIP, batting average against, strikeouts per nine innings (12.00) and hits allowed per nine (5.00).
Sheehan became the first Comets player to win a monthly award since Óscar Mercado was PCL Player of the Month for August 2023. Sheehan’s Pitcher of the Month award is OKC’s first since Mike Montgomery in 2023.
His successful stint came after a brief stretch back up with the Dodgers during a series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field but not pitching as they were able to manage the bullpen’s workload.
Bobby Miller optioned
Miller is back with the Comets after spending two days up with the Dodgers. Miller began a rehab assignment in Triple-A last month before getting activated on Sept. 5.
The right-hander made his 2026 debut with the Dodgers on Sunday night, allowing one run over three innings. Miller was aided by Kyle Tucker making a leaping catch in right field to rob Harry Ford of a home run.
Miller began the season on the 60-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation and he also dealt with a back issue. He’s now feeling healthy and embracing a bullpen role.
