The Los Angeles Dodgers won the eighth World Series title in franchise history by defeating the New York Yankees in thrilling fashion.

It’s the Dodgers’ fourth time prevailing over the Yankees in the Fall Classic. Prior to this year, the last time the two teams squared off in the postseason was in 1981, when Tommy Lasorda was managing a Dodgers team that overcame a World Series deficit after losing the first two games.

The Dodgers and Yankees have played in the World Series an MLB record 12th time. Even with falling short this year, New York has won eight of those head-to-head meetings.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers moved into a tie with the San Francisco Giants for the fourth-most World Series titles all-time in MLB history. Playing in the World Series 21 times, many of those came when they called Brooklyn their home.

Defeating the Yankees in convincing fashion put a bow on a 2024 season that included a rollercoaster of emotions as a result of countless storylines and challenges. Being without a treasure trove of pitchers, the Dodgers prevailed despite the All-Star list of names on the shelf due to injury.

Overcoming a loss in the National League Championship Series round in 2021, and back-to-back exits in the Division Series versus the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 and 2023, the Dodgers lifted the weight off their shoulders this October.

Taking down the Yankees in such a way spoke to being the class of Major League Baseball, and lends credit to the Dodgers front office, coaching staff and players. Their fourth trip to the World Series since the 2017 season culminated in a win and a lot of living up to expectations set before the start of the regular season.

In his first season with the Dodgers, megastar Shohei Ohtani was a key part to their effort, being the league’s first player to hit 50 home runs while stealing 50 bases in the season same.

After his years without scratching the postseason surface, Ohtani gets his ring, and he and his teammates return to Los Angeles for a World Series parade.

Dodgers path to 2024 World Series win

Entering the NLDS against the Padres, it stood as a pivotal test in the early stage of the Dodgers’ postseason run. Clearly facing their steepest opponent from a roster standpoint, Los Angeles side-stepped early emotion from San Diego to defeat their division rivals in five games.

After scoring a combined 21 runs over the first three games of the NLDS, the Dodgers pitching staff rattled off 24 consecutive scoreless innings, stymieing the Padres’ offense into an early ticket home.

Into the NLCS, the Dodgers wore down Mets pitching in a 4–2 series win. They scored eight or more runs four times, setting a record for most runs in a seven-game series.

The Dodgers exited the NLCS with the fourth-best run differential in a single postseason series, at a +20 margin.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was masterful in securing the franchise’s 22nd NL pennant and the 13th NL championship since the club moved to Los Angeles.
