Victor González and Michael Grove were optioned to Minor League camp in arguably the most noteworthy Los Angeles Dodgers Spring Training roster cuts.
Both are eligible to appear in remaining Spring Training games, but that doesn’t figure to be a likely proposition for Grove.
He started Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings. Grove allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while recording just one out before temporarily getting removed from the game because of throwing 23 pitches in the first inning. He was responsible for two runners on base that both scored.
Grove re-entered the game and needed just 45 pitches to then get through four scoreless innings while allowing only a single.
Overall this spring, Grove went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in six Cactus League starts. Grove getting optioned cemented Ryan Pepiot as the fifth starter for the Dodgers Opening Day rotation.
González struggled mightily in his 2023 Spring Training debut but had better results in ensuing games. After allowing four runs in his first appearance, González followed that giving up just one run to the Oakland Athletics, then three consecutive scoreless games.
González is looking to get his career back on track after regressing since playing a key role in the Dodgers winning the 2020 World Series.
Dodgers Spring Training roster
With only four games remaining, the Dodgers Spring Training roster now is at 38 players (19 pitchers; 19 position players), though that includes Daniel Hudson, Gavin Lux and Alex Reyes, all of whom are injured. Lux will miss the entire 2023 season after having surgery for a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee.
Hudson will begin the season on the 15-day injured list and Reyes isn’t expected to return from right shoulder surgery for multiple months.
The number of Dodgers non-roster invitees to Spring Training remaining in camp are two pitchers and six position players heading into the final Cactus League game and exhibition Freeway Series.
