The Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series since 1988 but it still came with some disappointment as Justin Turner was not able to join his teammates in celebrating. Turner was removed in the eighth inning without explanation.
Upon completion of the game, Fox sports relayed MLB informed them Turner tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). No additional details were provided. Turner’s positive test is the fist MLB had in six weeks.
They organized multiple postseason bubbles to better protect players from contracting the virus during the postseason, and for the Dodgers that amounted to playing at Globe Life Field upon reaching the National League Division Series.
It’s unclear how Turner would have contracted the virus, given all the protocols MLB enacted. Though, the league presumably could come under some criticism for allowing fans to attend the NL Championship Series and World Series, even at a reduced capacity.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred didn’t offer any possible during a postgame interview. “He was isolated to prevent spread,” Manfred said.
Turner went 8-for-25 in the six games, and was hitless in two at-bats prior to being removed. It was a heartbreaking development for someone all members of the Dodgers have touted as a leader and central figure to the team’s success.
Turner, along with others across baseball, will officially become a free agent on Wednesday morning.
