The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Shelby Miller to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Jake Marisnick on their 40-man roster.
Marisnick was signed to a Major League contract and added to the Dodgers’ active roster ahead of the series opener against the New York Mets.
For Miller, he now is not eligible to return until Sunday, August 20. The Dodgers put Miller on the 15-day IL on June 21 due to neck pain. He suffered the injury after driving from Arizona while on the bereavement list.
Miller last pitched against the Chicago White Sox on June 15, throwing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Overall in his first season with the Dodgers, the right-hander is 1-0 with one save, a 2.40 ERA, 4.51 FIP and 1.00 WHIP across 25 appearances.
Late last month, manager Dave Roberts estimated Miller would be on the IL for three weeks. But when recently discussing the neck injury, Miller alluded to a longer absence being expected.
“I’ve had neck stiffness in the past, like in Spring Training I missed a couple days from throwing. But this is a little bit more, I wouldn’t say severe, but worse than what that is,” Miller said.
He added pitching through the neck injury wasn’t comfortable and an MRI helped explain what was causing trouble. Miller is focused on eliminating inflammation in his neck but otherwise declined to provide specifics of what the MRI revealed.
“It’s a little worse than we thought, but we’ll just keep it at that,” he said.
When asked about Miller’s status earlier this month, Roberts answered, “He’s still not in a good spot. He’s still a ways away.”
Joe Kelly happy for Shelby Miller
When the White Sox visited Dodger Stadium, it not only meant Joe Kelly’s return but also an opportunity to see Miller. The two developed a close friendship, and Kelly said he was pleased seeing Miller have success with the Dodgers.
