The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Michael Grove from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Shelby Miller on the 15-day injured list due to neck pain prior to Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Grove returns in order to start in the finale of the Freeway Series. He had been optioned on June 21 as the corresponding move to the Dodgers calling up Emmet Sheehan, who made his MLB debut that night against the San Francisco Giants.
The Dodgers remain a starter short in their rotation as both Julio Urías and Noah Syndergaard are on the 15-day IL. Urías faced batters on Tuesday and is poised to make a rehab start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday before returning during the series with the Kansas City Royals.
A timeline for Syndergaard’s return has not been set.
Although Grove was optioned last week, he remained with the team on the taxi squad. “He’s going to hang around,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said over the weekend.
“We’re going to see what we have to do. The pitching is in flux right now, so Michael is in a holding pattern.”
Grove is 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across seven games (six starts) for L.A. this season.
Shelby Miller affected by neck injury
Miller last pitched against the Chicago White Sox on June 15, throwing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Overall in his first season with the Dodgers, the right-hander is 1-0 with one save, a 2.40 ERA, 4.51 FIP and 1.00 WHIP across 25 appearances.
Miller recently spent some time on the bereavement list and wound up not being available the night he was activated because of what Dodgers manager Dave Roberts described as a “neck situation.”
Roberts further elaborated that Miller’s neck had been somewhat of an issue for multiple days during his time away from the team. “Drove out from Arizona, was stuck in a car, and it got him,” Roberts said.
