The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Jake Reed off waivers from the New York Mets, marking a return to the organization for the right-handed relief pitcher. Reed first joined the Dodgers last season when he was signed to a Minor League contract.
He had pitched to an 8.44 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings across 10 appearances with the Angels’ Triple-A Salt Lake City affiliate before being designated for assignment and released. Reed posted a 3.38 ERA over six games for the Dodgers last season.
He was DFA’d and claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays in July 2021, but taken by the Mets on a waiver claim one week later and remained with the team to begin this season.
However, Reed’s future with the team was thrown into doubt earlier this week when he was designated for assignment as the corresponding move to the Mets claiming Sam Clay off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 29-year-old only appeared in five games for New York this season, struggling to the tune of an 11.37 ERA, 8.64 FIP and 1.58 WHIP. He fared only marginally better with Triple-A Syracuse, where Reed sported a 5.73 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over eight games.
Reed brings Dodgers 40-man roster full
The Dodgers’ 40-man roster is now full with the addition of Reed. A spot had been cleared when the club designated Ian Gibaut for assignment, and he eventually was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds.
The Dodgers will face roster decisions in the weeks and months ahead once Walker Buehler, Danny Duffy, Victor González, Tommy Kahnle, Dustin May, Edwin Ríos and Blake Treinen are ready to come off the 60-day injured list.
Jimmy Nelson is also hoping to return this season despite undergoing Tommy John surgery and a flexor tendon repair last year.
