The Cincinnati Reds claimed Ian Gibaut off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers after less than a week in the organization. The right-hander was designated for assignment over the weekend in order to make room for David Price when he was reinstated from the family medical emergency list.
The Dodgers claimed Gibaut off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians last Thursday. He was DFA’d to make room on the Guardians roster after they traded for catcher Sandy Leon.
The 28-year-old was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB draft, and over parts of four seasons in the Majors, is 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 5.27 FIP, and 1.50 WHIP in 28 relief appearances.
Gibaut posted a 3.20 ERA in 19.2 innings for Triple-A Columbus this season, and the right-hander did not end up making an appearance for the Dodgers prior to being let go.
After passing on waivers for the third time in recent weeks, Gibaut will suit up for his third team as a new member of the Reds.
Updates on rehabbing Dodgers pitchers
Caleb Ferguson has been on the 15-day IL since June 21, retroactive to June 17, with arm soreness. Although Ferguson felt he could pitch through it, the Dodgers opted to give him some extra time.
Last Saturday, Ferguson pitched an inning to Mookie Betts and Zach McKinstry and came out of it feeling well, so he should be activated in the near future.
Andrew Heaney is back to throwing after hitting the injured list for the second time this season, but this go-around wasn’t as serious and he is already back to throwing, which included a session on Saturday.
Dustin May has been recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2021 and after facing live hitters in separate bullpen sessions, manager Dave Roberts mentioned he is “really close” to being sent out for a rehab assignment.
