The Los Angeles Dodgers added Ian Gibaut to their active roster and optioned Justin Bruihl to Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Gibaut was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. He had been designated for assignment earlier in the week when the Guardians traded for Sandy Leon.

“I just had about 20 minutes with him,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Gibaut. “He’s excited to be a Dodger, and we’re going to run him out there.”

The 28-year-old was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Gibaut and Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman both attended Tulane University.

“Andrew didn’t draft him but they certainly have a connection,” Roberts said.

Gibaut made his MLB debut with the Rays in 2019 and has also pitched for the Texas Rangers (2020-21), Minnesota Twins (2021) and Guardians this season. Though, the right-hander only appeared in one game for the Guardians before getting DFA’d.

Over parts of four seasons in the Majors he’s 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 5.27 FIP and 1.50 WHIP in 28 relief appearances.

Gibaut had a 3.20 ERA in 19.2 innings for Triple-A Columbus this season and carries a career 4.15 ERA, 29% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate at that level. Gibaut is a lifetime 20-13 with a 3.17 ERA and 38 saves in 210 games (two starts) in the Minors.

Daniel Hudson was previously transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to add Gibaut to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

Dodgers rotating Bruihl

Bruihl heads back to the Minors one night after joining the Dodgers as the corresponding move to David Price going on the family emergency list. Bruihl threw 1.1 scoreless innings in the series opener against the Padres.

In 18 games with L.A., he’s 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA. Bruihl has now been optioned three times since being included on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster.
