Austin Wynns was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies, less than one week after the Los Angeles Dodgers designated him for assignment in order to activate Miguel Rojas off the 10-day injured list.

It represented a second time this season Wynns had been DFA’d. The San Francisco Giants previously did so, and Wynns elected free agency after clearing waivers.

That led to signing with the Dodgers as they went through a stretch without Will Smith because of a concussion. Alex Reyes was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Wynns on the Dodgers 40-man roster.

“It’s been a whirlwind. I’m happy I’m here,” Wynns said on his first day with the Dodgers. “I know my role and I’m going to try to do the best I can.”

Wynns appeared in six games (five starts) with the Dodgers and went 2-for-13 with one double and two RBI.

Wynns appeared in 66 games for the Giants last season, but only one this year. The 32-year-old made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 and also played for the club in 2019 and 2021.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team considered calling up Hunter Feduccia or Patrick Mazeika prior to signing Wynns, but not Diego Cartaya despite the heralded prospect already being on the 40-man roster.

Although the Dodgers activated Smith off the concussion list on April 28, it wasn’t until three days later that they stopped carrying a third catcher on the active roster.

Jake Reed remained in Dodgers organization

While Wynns has joined the Rockies, the Dodgers managed to keep Jake Reed as part of their organizational depth. He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and was sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Reed had the option to refuse the assignment due to previously being sent outright to the Minors in his career.
