After beginning the sale process this past November, Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder reportedly reached an agreement to sell the franchise to a group that includes Los Angeles Dodgers part-owners Magic Johnson and Todd Boehly for a record $6 billion.

The amount surpasses the $5.33 billion Dodgers principle owner Mark Walter paid to purchase the Chelsea Football Club last year, and the NFL record $4.65 billion price tag the Walton-Penner family ownership group met to acquire the Denver Broncos.

The Commanders ownership group is being led by Josh Harris, who also owns majority stakes in the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

Johnson, who is part of several business ventures, is thrilled to be part of the new Commanders owners.

I could not be more excited to be a partner in the proposed new ownership group for the Washington Commanders. Josh Harris has assembled an amazing group who share a commitment to not only doing great things on the field but to making a real impact in the DMV community. I’m so…

Since retiring as a Hall of Fame player with the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson has remained active in the sports world.

In addition to being part of the Guggenheim Baseball Management group that purchased the Dodgers in 2012, Johnson has minority stakes in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and MLS’ Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), as well as other football and basketball franchises in SimWin Sports.

Johnson has long been interested in becoming an owner of an NFL team, as he and Harris previously attempted to purchase the Broncos before they were sold to the Walton-Penner family ownership group.

Boehly purchasing Washington Commanders represents homecoming

Boehly, who is the current CEO of Eldridge and Clearlake Capital Group, grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, and has been a longtime supporter of the Commanders.

Along with being a part-owner of the Dodgers, Boehly was part of the Walter-led group that purchased the Chelsea Football Club.
