Of the four major North American Sports, three of them feature playoff formats with multi-game series, with the obvious exception being football.
With that, the Los Angeles Dodgers helped to make some history through their Game 3 win on Monday against the New York Yankees.
The 2024 season is unique in that it is the first time ever that the championship series in MLB, NHL and NBA have all had a team go up 3-0 in the series.
The NBA kicked it off with the Boston Celtics going up big on the Dallas Mavericks. The NHL was up next with the Florida Panthers taking a commanding lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Most recent was the Dodgers taking a 3-0 lead in the World Series.
History for North American sports
MLB: Dodgers go up 3-0 on Yankees
Freddie Freeman set an MLB record with a home run in six consecutive World Series games as the Dodgers took a commanding series lead.
They couldn’t complete the sweep the next night but made World Series history on Wednesday with the biggest comeback in a clinching game by erasing a 5-0 deficit to capture their eighth championship.
NHL: Panthers go up 3-0 on Oilers
The Panthers held a 4-1 lead after two quarters against the Oilers and survived a late comeback to take Game 3 by a score of 4-3.
Despite the loss, it was a spark the Oilers needed as they won the next three games to put the pressure back on the Panthers. The Oilers came close in Game 7, but fell just short as the Panthers won 2-1.
NHL: Celtics go up 3-0 on Mavericks
The Celtics won Game 3 of the NBA Finals comfortably by a score of 106-99. Kyrie Irving led all players with 35 points for the Mavericks, but Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown scored 31 and 30, respectively, to power Boston to victory.
The Mavericks scratched across one win in Game 4 before Celtics closed out the series in their next opportunity to do so.
