Dodgers News: Zac Rosscup Designated For Assignment, Casey Sadler Recalled From Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Zac Rosscup for assignment and recalled Casey Sadler from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers acquired Sadler on July 3 in a trade that sent Nathan Witt to the Tampa Bay Rays. Sadler appeared in nine games for the Rays this season, pitching to a 1.86 ERA, 4.35 FIP and 1.09 WHIP, to go along with 11 strikeouts and five walks over 19.1 innings.

He was immediately optioned to Oklahoma City upon completion of the trade, and appeared in two innings for the affiliate prior to receiving a call-up. Sadler allowed a combined four runs in six innings pitched during those games.

He’s made 18 career appearances in the Majors, spending time with the Pittsburgh Pirates as well as the Rays. Sadler is 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA, 4.07 FIP and 1.41 WHIP in those games.

He gives the Dodgers a fresh arm in the bullpen after they used six relief pitchers, including Rosscup, to defeat the Boston Red Sox in 12 innings on Sunday.

Rosscup originally joined the Dodgers organization when he was claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies in July 2018. He appeared in 17 games for the Dodgers after that point, memorably completing an immaculate inning against the Seattle Mariners.

Rosscup was released last November and went on to sign a one-year contract with the Mariners. Although it was a Major League deal, the left-hander was designated for assignment in May.

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Rosscup off waivers less than a week later, though he only appeared in two games before again getting DFA’d. Rosscup then signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers last month.

He appeared in seven games for L.A., throwing three innings and allowing two runs. Rosscup is a combined 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA for the Mariners, Blue Jays and Dodgers this season.

L.A. has one week to potentially trade Rosscup if he is claimed off waivers. Should Rosscup clear waivers, he would become eligible to be released or accept a Minor League assignment.
